 Aim:

To provide students with resources to be able to identify, maintain, and install a variety of different hot water systems and associated safety devices; including low and mains pressure, direct and indirect heat sources.

 Prescriptor:

This module ’Hot Water Systems and Valves’ includes information on different heat sources for hot water systems.  The different valves used for hot water installations, relevance of safety valves and their functions, and which valves are used in the different systems.  Trade science related information including Boyles Law, Charles Law and requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

 People credited with this module are able to: Identify direct and indirect heating systems, low and mains pressure hot water systems and the valves incorporated in them.

Demonstrate knowledge of Boyles Law and Charles Law and New Zealand Building Code requirements for the installation of the different systems.

 Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this module students will be able to identify hot water systems and the valving requirements for those installations to comply with the New Zealand Building Code.

 Content:

Information covering aspects of heating and storing hot water, the relationship of temperature and pressure, hot water system valve requirements for direct and indirect – mains and low pressure hot water systems.

 Teaching Learning Methods:

  • Completion by the student of a printed workbook (kept by the student for use as reference at later dates)
  • Visual Presentation to be viewed in conjunction with workbook along with tasks requiring the student reference relevant codes to help ensure the student has knowledge to comply.

 Assessment Details:

Online Multiple Choice Assessment of which the result is automatically forwarded to the Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers Board.
